The companies behind the iPhone apps have apologized after it was revealed that they had uploaded users contact lists information without permission.

Two application companies Path and Hipster both sent contact data to company’s servers in order to help users find their friends who were also using the applications.

Both of the apps firms reported that they had now updated their apps to fix the problem; however there is also a concern that the practice may be more extensive.

On Wednesday, the journaling app Path, which is a social media app that bills itself as the smart journal that helps you share life with the those you love announced that it has removed all the information that it got from users’ address books, in a rapid response to user backlash.

Pat’s CEO, Dave Morin said in a blog post that through the feedback they have received from all of you, the company now understands that the method or way they had designed their “Add Friends” feature was wrong, and they are sincerely apologizes if any were uncomfortable with how Path’s app used your phone contacts.

Morin said that Path has also updated its Apple’s iOS app to provide its users the choice to turn on the address book addition, and no longer uploads the data automatically. He added that they always spread this and any other information you share on the company servers over an encrypted connection and it is also stored securely on their servers using industry standard firewall technology.

It was also revealed that Hipster app was to be uploading address book information to the company’s servers without explicit permission.

Hipster boss Dough Ludlow said that they blew it, they are sorry, and they are going to make it right, added that when they built their “Find Friends” feature for iOS, they clearly dropped the ball when it comes to protecting their users’ privacy.
