Edging out Bode Miller, Klaus Kroell gave Austria its first World Cup downhill victory of the season.
Miller was faster than Kroell at every time split Friday, but the American lost time on the bottom section bottom run.
Didier Cuche, the veteran Swiss skier was bidding for a third straight win on the downhill this season. But he wound up coming in third in a tight race under overcast skies, that had light snow falling on the La Verte des Houches course.
Hannes Reichelt had the previous best performance on downhill from an Austrian this season, by finishing second on the Lauberhorn course in Wengen last month. Meanwhile, Kroell has had three third-place finishes.
